Congress president Sonia Gandhi will visit Jammu and Kashmir on December 9 and 10 to take stock of the relief and rehabilitation work that has been carried out by the state government in coordination with non governmental organisations and the Army in the South Kashmir where over 1300 people were killed in the October 8 earthquake.

"Mrs Gandhi will arrive in Jammu at 0900 IST on December 9,which happens to be her birthday, where Chief Minister Gulam Nabi Azad will receive her.

"From there, she will fly to Poonch by a helicopter and visit the earthquake hit areas and distribute blankets, woollen clothes and other essential items to the victims," Harcharan Singh Josh, who has been entrusted with the task of overseeing the relief work told rediff.com on phone from Srinagar.

Sonia will later visit some relief camps in Uri.

The state government claimed that over 80 relief centres with prefabricated material have already been raised and some more are being given final touches.

"Each centre can accommodate over 150 persons," Josh said.

On Saturday, she will visit Thangdhar and meet the villagers from Teethwal at the relief camp set up by the state government.
