A pilot engine was run on Thursday on a trial basis on the restored tracks of the Konkan Railway, where Matsyagandha Express had derailed killing 14 people and injuring 62 others.
The trial engine was run on the restored tracks between Veer and Karanjadi to ascertain the safety, KR sources said.
The pilot train was run at a speed of 10 km per hour on the newly repaired tracks, KR sources said, adding drivers have been instructed not to run trains over 70 km per hour during monsoons.
The first passenger train, Delhi-Ernakulam Mangala Express, went through the route at 1.40 pm.
Two cranes that were put on operation have removed all mangled bogies from the tracks, said Rajaram who had been supervising the rescue operation.
The slower speed of trains would result in an average of 40 minutes difference in train's scheduled timings, the sources said.
