Swarnajayanti Fellowships 2003
The Government of India instituted the Swarnajayanti Fellowships to commemorate the 50th year of India's Independence. Under the scheme a selected number of young scientists, with a proven track record, are provided special assistance and support to enable them to pursue basic research in frontier areas of science and technology. The fellowships are scientist specific and not institution specific, very selective and have close academic monitoring.
NATURE OF SUPPORT: The support will cover all the requirements for performing research and will include a fellowship of Rs 25,000 per month for five years, for those scientists who do not draw any salary from any other source. The fellowship will be limited to Rs 10,000 per month for those who draw salary from another source. In addition to fellowship, grants for equipment, computational and communication facilities, consumables, contingencies, administrative support, national and international travel and other special requirements will be covered. Scientists selected for the award will be allowed to pursue unfettered research with a freedom and flexibility in terms of expenditure as approved in the research plan.
DURATION: The duration of the fellowship will be for a period not exceeding five years.
ELIGIBILITY: The applicant should possess one of the following degrees or equivalent: PhD in Science/Engineering, Masters in Engineering or Technology/MD in Medicine. Scientists should be active in the frontier areas of science and engineering with outstanding contributions, (research publications, peer recognition etc.) in his areas of research. The fellowship is open to Indian Nationals residing in India or abroad. The scientists can choose to work at any S&T institution in India. The fellowship is open to scientists between 30 to 40 years as on December 31, 2003.
SELECTION: The selection procedure will include consideration at various stages. An empowered committee will make the final selection based on the recommendation of expert committees. Scientists selected for the award should have accomplished innovative original research in frontier areas of science & technology.

National Board of Examinations
Speciality Examinations to be held in various disciplines of Medical Sciences For the award of Diplomate of National Board in December 2003
The National Board of Examinations is an autonomous body established by the ministry of health and family welfare, primarily to conduct postgraduate and higher examinations in various disciplines of medical sciences of high and uniform standard at the national level. Successful candidates are awarded 'Diplomate of National Board,' which is recognized as equivalent to postgraduate (MD/MS in broad specialities) and postdoctoral (DM/MCH in higher specialities) degree qualifications of Indian universities and included in the First Schedule of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956.
The examination of the Board is held in two parts -- Primary and Final. The next batch of examinations will be held on December 13 and 14, 2003. Primary on Sunday, December 14 and Final on December 13 and 14 in the following specialities:
BROAD SPECIALITIES: Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology, Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine, General Medicine, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Radio-diagnosis, Radio-therapy, Anaesthesiology, Dermatology and Venereology, Respiratory Diseases, Nuclear Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Social and Preventive Medicine, Maternal and Child Health, Health Administration including Hospital Administration and Family Medicine (General Practice)
Dental Specialities: 1. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery 2. Prosthodontics 3. Conservative dentistry 4. Orthodontics. Only MDS passed are eligible to apply for Dental Specialities.

PRIMARY EXAMINATIONS:
There will be a common Primary Examination for all the Broad Specialities and for direct 5-year course in Neurosurgery, Paediatric Surgery and Plastic Surgery. After passing MBBS and completion of internship the candidate shall be eligible to take the Primary Examination. This examination will be of the MBBS level.
Candidates possessing postgraduate qualification in any speciality -- both degree and diploma from universities recognized by the Medical Council of India in any of the Broad Specialities -- will be exempted from the Primary Examination. They may appear directly for the Final Examination, if otherwise eligible.
FINAL EXAMINATION:
Bulletin of Information of December 2003 Examination of the Board may be consulted for eligibility in the subject of Broad, Super Specialities and Dental Specialities.
Only those candidates who are registered with the Board for training at an Institution/Hospital should apply for the examination to be held in December 2003 provide they have completed three years of training. MD/MS candidates can apply straightway.

Application form fee of Rs 100 through bank draft is required to be remitted with the application.
All candidates who have failed in Board examinations and wish to take the December 2003 examination are requested to apply on the new form. Application filled in the old forms will not be accepted.
Application form duly completed with all particulars should reach the Executive Director, National Board of Examinations, Mahatma Gandhi Marg, Ansari Nagar, New Delhi 110029 by September 20, 2003 or with late fee of Rs 500 on or before September 30, 2003. Incomplete application form without requisite enclosures are liable to be rejected.
