Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday decided not to take disciplinary action against party legislators loyal to K Karunakaran, who had proposed the candidature of a rebel nominee, Kodoth Govindan Nair, in the last month's Rajya Sabha polls from Kerala.
Gandhi also retained Pradesh Congress Committee president K Muraleedharan -- son of Karunakaran -- in his post.
"The decision is welcome and it will be accepted by all sections in the state unit of the party. This need not be seen as a victory for any particular faction," Muraleedharan said in Thiruvananthapuram.
The high command had taken into account all factors and senior leaders had been consulted, he said.
Nair had stood against All India Congress Committee-approved nominees Vayalar Ravi and Thennala Balakrishna Pillai. Nair, who was suspended from the party for six years, was defeated.
Chief Minister A K Antony also welcomed the high command's decision.
The various 'groups' in the faction-ridden state unit will work together to strengthen the party, he said in Thiruvananthapuram.
The Congress is a democratic party and when problems arise it knows how to solve them amicably, he said.
