Tell us your dreams for India

August 18, 2003

'I want to move around J&K without fear'

I am working overtime to save enough money so that one day I can visit Europe, especially Switzerland. It is my long cherished dream. I have many friends there.

I polish, paint, scrub and toil in my boat floating on the world famous Dal Lake.

I have a vision of my own for India. It is not a lofty hyped dream. My ambition is that tourists in large numbers visit my valley next year too.

I work very hard during the summer ferrying tourists in my boat and during winter I go to Goa in connection with my business.

I want to be able to move freely within J&K without fear and without the presence of securitymen. I hope India-Pakistan can make permanent peace.

I wish I could change the hearts and minds of Indian politicians who are the biggest impediment to the prosperity of the poor.

As told to Mukhtar Ahmad
