Kashmir Committees of India, Pakistan to meet

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The Ram Jethmalani led-Kashmir Committee and the All-Parties Hurriyat Conference on Saturday night discussed "specific proposals" to resolve the Kashmir issue.

"We have decided to meet [the] Kashmir Committee of Pakistan [headed by Sardar Abdul Qayoom Khan] at any time and place of convenience," Kashmir Committee member Dilip Padgaonkar said after the meeting at the residence of Jethmalani.

The two sides would meet again on Sunday to carry forward the dialogue, Padgaonkar said.

Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said the discussions had made substantial progress.

Asked if the Hurriyat would be part of the meeting involving the Kashmir Committees, the Mirwaiz said there would be no hesitation in joining the talks if they were invited.

Asked if Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee or Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani would be apprised of the developments, Padgaonkar said, "We will be communicating with concerned persons in the government."

Abdul Gani Bhat had led the Hurriyat delegation. Other members included the Mirwaiz, Sheikh Mohammed Ali of the Jammat-e-Islami, Javed Mir of the J&K Liberation Front and Khalil Mohammed Khalil, Delhi chief of the Kashmir Awareness bureau.
