Talks to free foreign hostages fail in Moscow

The first round of talks to liberate the 75 foreign hostages in a Moscow theatre has broken down, reports said.

On Thursday, parliament member Irina Khakamada and lawmaker Iosif Kobzon, who is also a popular singer among the Chechens, spoke with the captors and one of them promised that citizens of countries "not at war with Chechnya" would be released, ITAR-Tass news agency reported.

"[Foreign] ambassadors and Red Cross officials were there, but no hostage was released," Interfax news agency quoted Alexander Muzykantsky, an official with the Moscow city hall, as saying.

United States Counsel General James Warlick expressed hope that the hostages would be released soon.

Americans, Britons, Dutch, Australians, Austrians and Germans are among the hundreds of hostages.
