Security beefed up in J&K
ahead of PM's visit

Security has been beefed up in Jammu and Kashmir in view of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's three-day visit to the state beginning Tuesday.

"We are taking appropriate measures. We have stepped up security in the state to ensure that the prime minister's visit passes off smoothly," Director General of Police A K Suri said.

All roads leading to Srinagar -- the state's summer capital -- have been barricaded and a thorough screening of all vehicles is being carried out.

Kashmir Bar Association has called for a general strike on Wednesday, when Vajpayee is scheduled to arrive in the Valley, to protest Monday's killing of an auto-rickshaw driver in Srinagar.

Hurriyat Conference too has called for a state-wide strike.
