One killed in Pakistani shelling

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

One person was killed and two wounded in heavy Pakistani shelling in Uri sector of northern Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday evening.

Police said that for the first time nearly eight shells hit the Uri town. Two of them fell near the police station.

The shelling led to panic among the locals, who took shelter in their homes.

The army retaliated and shelled Pakistani positions.

Meanwhile, a college girl was killed and four others, including two cops, were wounded when the Central Reserve Police Force opened fire at Tulsi Bagh in uptown Srinagar on Tuesday afternoon.

Police sources said that a CRPF party signalled scooter-borne policemen to stop for security check near a barricade. However, the two cops ignored the signal and sped away. The CRPF men opened heavy fire on the cops resulting in the death of the girl.

The injured were shifted to a hospital. Tension gripped the area following the incident.
