8 victims of Jammu carnage cremated

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Amidst anger and tears, eight victims of Tuesday's carnage, including five women, were given a final farewell by relatives, army officers and the local population at Shastri Nagar in Jammu City on Thursday.

A six-year-old girl, Malli, was buried in the Shastri Nagar cemetery in the afternoon before seven others were cremated.

Tears rolled down the eyes of the assembled relatives as the bodies were brought to Shastri Nagar. The victims were family members of soldiers posted in Jammu.

Local people joined relatives and army officers to bid a tearful farewell to the victims. Five of those cremated, including Havaldar H S Chauhan, his wife and daughter, belonged to Uttar Pradesh.

The bodies of seven bus passengers killed in the incident were handed over by police to their relatives.

Meanwhile, militants late on Thursday afternoon shot and killed a sub-inspector of the paramilitary Indo-Tibetan Border Police at Bijbehara on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway and made away with his rifle.

Angry ITBP troopers later roughed up bystanders and allegedly torched four shops in the main market. Senior police officers rushed to Bijbehara. Fire tenders were pressed into service to control the blaze. Traffic on the highway was disrupted.
