Geelani taken into preventive custody

Former All Parties Hurriyat Conference chairman and firebrand Jamaat-e-Islami leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani was taken into preventive custody on Friday while he was on his way to Baramulla to address a Friday congregation, official sources said.

Police stopped Geelani at Mirgund near Pattan and took him to a police station, the sources said.

They said Geelani was taken into custody as police feared he could stage a protest demonstration in the town after the Friday prayers and create a law and order problem.

Meanwhile, the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front acting chief Javid Ahmad Mir and six others were released from police custody on Thursday evening.

Mir and his associates were detained when they tried to take out a procession at Maisuma in the heart of Srinagar to protest the manhandling of jailed JKLF leader Mohammad Yaseen Malik by Hindu Shiv Sena activists in Jammu on Wednesday.
