Army sets up mechanism to monitor infiltration

The army has set in motion a 'monitoring mechanism' to assess Islamabad's claim of stopping cross-border infiltration.

A team of officers from the operations and intelligence directorate is being put in place to make daily reports on attempted infiltrations across the Line of Control and the International Border, army sources said.

The move came after a marathon meeting that army chief General Sundararajan Padmanabhan had with his five commanders.

Though officials were tight-lipped, the issue of military de-escalation also figured in the deliberations. Defence sources have already pointed out that troops pullback will be undertaken only in a phased manner and that the army will remain in force in Jammu and Kashmir till October assembly elections.
