The process of electing a successor to President K R Narayanan, who will be demitting office on July 24, was set in motion with the Election Commission issuing a notification on Tuesday.
According to the poll schedule issued by the Commission, the last date for filing nominations would be June 25 and the scrutiny would take place on the following day.
While the last date for the withdrawal of candidatures would be on June 28, election, if necessary, would be held on July 15, it said.
"The election will be held in terms of clause (1) of Article 62 of the Constitution, to fill the vacancy to be caused by the expiration of the term of office of the incumbent President," the EC notification said.
The President is elected by the members of an Electoral College consisting of elected members of both Houses of Parliament and the MLAs of state assemblies, including Union Territories of Delhi and Pondicherry.
A total of 4120 MLAs and 776 MPs would participate in the poll to elect 12th President of the country.
While the vote value of the MLAs have been calculated at 549474, the MPs vote value has been placed at 549408 taking the total number to 10,98,882 in the Electoral College.
