Joint patrolling proposal evolutionary: Jaswant

Declaring that India was committed to moving on the path of peace, External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh on Friday termed as "evolutionary" the proposal of joint patrolling with Pakistan of the Line of Control.

"We are very much committed to moving on the path of peace because to peace there is no alternative. That has been India's conviction and commitment," he told reporters after holding talks with US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, who arrived in New Delhi on a day-long visit on Friday from Islamabad.

Asked if a joint patrolling mechanism, as suggested by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, was being evolved, Singh said, "It is not as if joint patrolling is going to be established tomorrow... It is evolutionary and that is why one should work towards it."

During the short press interaction, Armitage said US President George W Bush and Secretary of State Colin Powell had sent him to the region in search of peace.

Describing his discussions with the external affairs minister as "frank and full", Armitage said he was able to relate to Singh the "tone and tenor" of the content of the discussion he had with Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf.
