Impose economic sanctions on Pakistan: Advani

Doubting whether the current international pressure would prompt Pakistan to stop exporting terrorism, Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani on Monday evening suggested economic sanctions against Islamabad.

Advani said that India's decision on countering Pakistan-sponsored terrorism would not be influenced by 'the enemy's statements or promises'.

Advani said, "During the last one week, US and Britain have publicly reprimanded Pakistan (over cross-border terrorism). This is very significant because what the Western countries were saying in private, they are now started saying publicly."

"I don't know what effect it will have on Pakistan and whether there will be a change in its attitude," he said, adding, "I feel Pakistan is not going to change."

Referring to the December 13 terrorist attack on Parliament, he said it was a 'turning point' for India in the same manner as September 11 was for the US.

"After that incident, Indian government has taken a resolve as per which we have gone for deployment of troops on the border and are working on other plans also," Advani said.
