We want to avoid war with Pakistan: India

Sujit Chatterjee in Almaty

Declaring that it wanted to avoid a war with Pakistan, India on Monday night said Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf must take action against terrorists as conveyed by him to the US and Britain.

"The world wants to avoid any conflict and so do we. General Musharraf has made some promises. These have been conveyed to us by the US, the UK and other interlocutors," Prime Minister's Principal Secretary and National Security Adviser Brajesh Mishra said in Almaty.

"If these promises are implemented and we can verify them, we will take appropriate steps," he said briefing the media on Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's talks with Tajik President E Rakhmanov and Afghan leader Hamid Karzai.

Asked if there was any possibility of a dialogue between Vajpayee and Musharraf on the sidelines of the regional security summit on Tuesday, Mishra said, "It will be unfortunate to draw attention away from the success of the conference by holding an unproductive meeting."

He said after Musharraf's January 12 speech there was a 'downturn' in terrorist violence in February.

But in March, April and May, 300 incidents took place and an equal number of people were killed each month reversing the control exercised in February.

"Because of this we are looking at the new promises (of Musharraf) very carefully and we want to see them implemented," he said.
