Annan wants Vajpayee, Musharraf to meet

United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan on Monday called upon the Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to meet Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf in the regional conference being held in the Kazakhstan capital Almaty.

He hoped the meeting 'will be used wisely' and that the discussions taking place there 'will pull us away from the brink (of war)'.

"I would not want to contemplate a nuclear war between the two countries. I count on the wisdom of the leadership of (Pakistani) President (Pervez) Musharraf and (Indian) Prime Minister (Atal Bihari) Vajpayee to assure that we do not move in that direction," Annan was quoted as saying.
