Brahmos anti-ship missile to be produced in 2003

The Brahmos anti-ship cruise missile, developed jointly by India and Russia, would go into production by end of 2003, defence ministry sources told rediff.com on Saturday.

The Brahmos missile has been flight tested successfully on June 12, 2001 and April 28, 2002, the source said.

According to him the number of missiles to be produced would depend on the requirement of the armed forces and export orders.

The sources also said that the government has placed an order with the Defence Research and Development Organisation for Nuclear Biological and Chemical (NBC) defence equipment

He said that 3,34,000 gas masks have been ordered at the cost of Rs 1.27 billion.

Defence ministry sources clarified that the NBC defence equipment is being manufactured indigenously, and technological know-how developed by the DRDO has been transferred to its industry partners.

The sources said that the Israel Aircraft Industries Limited has been awarded a contract for conversion of Boeing 737 aircraft into cargo aircraft.
