Indian High Commission staffer
abducted in Pakistan

K J M Varma in Islamabad

In the midst of heightened Indo-Pak tensions, an Indian high commission staffer in Islamabad was abducted on Saturday by unidentified persons, believed to be Pakistan intelligence operatives, while he was returning home along with his 10-year-old son.

High commission officials said Kulwant Singh was abducted at around 11.30 hrs near his residence at Royal Enclave while he was returning on a two-wheeler.

Most of the high commission staffers live near the Royal Enclave.

The abductors left behind the child, who managed to return home and inform his mother, the officials said.

This is the second such incident in the last two months. A K Khanna was abducted in April at the Royal Enclave apartments and released in the evening after over five hours of violent interrogation. He was subsequently expelled on charges of spying.
