UK withdraws travel restrictions to India

The United Kingdom has ended travel restrictions on citizens travelling to India and eased restrictions on visits to Pakistan.

British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said it was no longer necessary for British citizens to avoid travel to India - or for those already in India to consider leaving.

Advice on visiting Pakistan has also been modified - but because of continued risk of terrorist attacks the foreign office has recommended against all 'non-essential' travel by British citizens who are not of Pakistani origin.

Announcing the changes during a visit to Brussels on Monday evening, Straw said, "This latest travel advice follows the assessment I was able to make on my visits last week to India and Pakistan."

"I am glad that tensions have subsided sufficiently so as to justify this easing of the earlier advice. Our revised assessment also means that staff and dependants who came home will now be able to return to India and that as soon as is practical a full visa service in India can resume," he said.
