Fernandes moves bill, opposition stages walkout

The entire opposition barring the AIADMK on Wednesday staged a walkout in the Rajya Sabha when Defence Minister George Fernandes moved the Coast Guard (Amendment) Bill.

The opposition has been unhappy with Fernandes's appointment as defence minister despite being implicated in the defence deals scandal.

"A lot of hanky-panky occurs in the defence ministry," Congress member Santosh Bagrodia said.

Earlier, Deputy Chairperson Najma Heptualla had asked opposition members to cooperate in passage of the Bill.

However, even as Fernandes rose to speak on the Bill, the opposition walked out of the House.

The Bill was later passed by a voice vote with empty opposition benches.
