Tehelka reporter arrested in poaching case

Tehelka reporter Kumar Badal was on Wednesday arrested in connection with a case of poaching of endangered leopards in Shivalik forests of Uttar Pradesh.

Badal was arrested after he appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation following summons issued to him, a spokesman of the agency said.

The Tehelka reporter had been working under the fictitious name of 'Pankaj', for whom two poachers Inam and Meherban, arrested earlier, had been working, the CBI said.

During the interrogation of the poachers, currently in judicial custody, it was found that the duo used to get in touch with 'Pankaj' on a cell phone number '9810290047'.

The CBI had seized documents relating to the mobile phone, belonging to Buffalo Networks Private Limited, the parent company of Tehelka, from the residence of Badal during a search conducted on June 26.

The case pertained to killing of three leopards in Biharigarh area of Shivalik division under sections 9, 49, 49-A and 51 of the Wildlife Act of 1972 and 120-B (Criminal Conspiracy).
