JeM pointman sent to 14 days judicial custody

The Jaish-e-Mohammed pointman in Delhi and prime accused in the December 13 attack on Parliament, Mohammad Afzal, was on Saturday remanded to 14 days judicial custody by a Delhi court.

Designated Judge S N Dhingra remanded Afzal to custody after he was produced three days before the expiry of his 10-day police remand under the Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance, as investigating officer Rajvir Singh submitted that his custodial interrogation was complete.

Singh told the court that the police had taken Afzal to Jammu and Kashmir twice during his custodial remand.

The judicial remand of Afzal's associates -- Shaukat Hussain, his wife Navjot Sandhu alias Afsan Guru and A R Geelani -- was extended by 14 days.

The accused, who were produced before the court amidst tight security, said they would engage their private advocate to defend themselves. The court clarified that in case the accused failed to engage their own lawyers, they could ask for amicus curiae.

During the proceeding, a weeping Sandhu said had she been aware that her husband Shaukat was involved in terrorist activity she would have divorced him.

However, the judge observed: "Weeping is no solution. So many persons have been killed in the attack and their mothers are also crying."

The court, however, accepted the submission of Shaukat and directed the jail authorities to allow him to meet his pregnant wife once a week. The court also allowed Sandhu's plea seeking permission to come out of the jail hospital ward to sit in the sun for an hour everyday.
