US may help Pakistan get $5 billion in aid

In what is seen as a reward for joining the coalition against terror, the US is planning to help Pakistan get over five billion dollars in aid.

Pakistan is likely to get the assistance from the World Bank, International Development Association, International Financial Corporation, International Monetary Fund and Asian Development Bank, analysts said.

The spokesman for US president's National Security Council, Sean McCormack, said at a press conference that George W Bush and his Pakistani counterpart Pervez Musharraf have discussed about the economic relief and assistance.

Bush pledged $200 million for the year 2003, which would be used to wipe out the one billion dollars of outstanding debt pending against Pakistan.

McCormack said, "We are discussing with President Musharraf additional funds in the current fiscal year (ending September 30) that will be for frontline states in the war against terrorism."
