United States President George W Bush asserted on Friday that his administration was doing its best to save Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal scribe who was abducted from Karachi in Pakistan last Wednesday.
The abductors had threatened to execute the journalist on Friday if their demands, which included "better treatment" for the Afghan prisoners in US custody, were not met. The deadline has passed with no word on Pearl's fate.
"We are working with the Pakistani government to chase down any leads possible," Bush told reporters ahead of a meeting with Jordan's King Abdullah.
"We've been in touch with the Wall Street Journal and, obviously, we're deeply concerned, as is the Pakistani government, and we will continue to do everything we can to rescue him," the president said
