Parliament attack: Police yet to approach Interpol

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

Though Special Judge S N Dhingra, hearing the Parliament attack case, has asked the Delhi police to seek Interpol's assistance to capture Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Maulana Masood Azhar, his aide in Kashmir Ghazi Baba and Tariq Ahmed, mastermind of the attack, the police seem to be in no hurry.

Asked if the police had sent a request to the Interpol division of the Central Bureau of Investigation to put out alerts for the three persons accused under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, a senior officer said the matter was being "looked into".

"Even if we send the notice to the Interpol division and they issue a red-corner alert, would it make a difference?" another officer argued. "They have issued a red-corner alert on Masood Azhar before, but have we got him from Pakistan? All three accused are in Pakistan and there is no likelihood of Pakistan handing them over to India."

Judge Dhingra declared the three men 'proclaimed offenders' on April 1. "The prosecution is directed to exploit international channels through Interpol and direct their presence in court," he said in his order.

The three men have been booked along with four others who were arrested in connection with the attack on Parliament on December 13 under sections 3, 4 and 5 of the POTA and sections 302 and 307 of the Indian Penal Code.
