Failure to beget male child proves costly

An Indo-Canadian woman was allegedly beaten by her husband, mother-in-law and sister-in-law because she was unable to bear a male child. The British Columbia provincial court is now hearing the case.

Crown Counsel Winston Sayson said in court on Thursday that Ranjit Kaur Dhillon was attacked in January by her husband Sukhjinder Singh Dhillon because "she gave birth to two girls and failed to produce a boy".

Sukhjinder's mother Balvir Kaur Dhillon and his sister Davinder Kaur Dhillon also allegedly joined in beating the victim. According to Sayson, Ranjit Kaur had her teeth knocked out and was beaten with a rolling pin in two separate attacks.

All three are now charged with two counts of assault causing bodily harm and one count of assault with a weapon.

But all three accused have reportedly entered a plea of not guilty through their lawyer, Paul Sandhu.

Bhupinder Kaur Varn, a neighbour of the victim, reportedly testified in court that she heard a commotion in Dhillon's house one day in January and so went to investigate.

"When they opened the door, she [the victim] was crying and sitting on the floor," she said. Ranjit Kaur called out to her: 'Save me, sister. Save me...', Varn reportedly said in court.

The hearing continues.
