Mathew pleads for presidential intervention

Thomas Mathew, a director in the Union home ministry suspended for his alleged involvement in the tehelka.com expose, has termed as "without any grain of truth" the charge that he masterminded a conspiracy to destabilise the government and sought President K R Narayanan's intervention to revoke the "unjust" order.

In a communication addressed to Narayanan, Mathew said, "A systematic effort is also on to defame me in the press by giving select reporters official leaks of information."

Stating that he had 25 years of "exemplary service" in the government "without a single blemish or an accusing finger" pointed at him, Mathew said, "The most serious allegation made against me without a grain of truth is that I have masterminded a conspiracy to destabilise the government."

Urging the President to get the "unjust, illegal, uncalled for and vindictive" suspension order revoked, Mathew said he was under "extreme emotional stress" and that there was a "great threat to his life and liberty".

Responding to queries, a home ministry spokesman said the government had received Mathew's letter to the President routed through the ministry.

He, however, said the officer's reply to the show-cause notice served on him on March 23 had not yet been received.

In its show-cause notice, the ministry has listed charges including leakage of classified information and violation of the Official Conduct Rules.
