BJP's dalit leaders demand action against Shanta Kumar

Several dalit politicians of the Bharatiya Janata Party met party president K Jana Krishnamurthy on Thursday and demanded disciplinary action against Union Minister Shanta Kumar for his recent remarks against disgraced former president Bangaru Laxman.

Led by the party's Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes Morcha president Ramnath Kovind, MP, and comprising, among others, Anita Arya and Ashok Pradhan, the delegates brought to Krishnamurthy's notice Kumar's remarks at the party's national executive and in subsequent media reports.

They said that at a time when the party was passing through a critical phase and the top leadership itself had defended Laxman, Kumar's observations could send a wrong message to the party's rank and file, specially its dalit supporters.

Krishnamurthy gave them a patient hearing.

Kumar had reportedly sought Laxman's removal from the party in the wake of the tehelka.com expose of corruption in defence deals.
