Sounding a note of caution on the Congress party's demand for the resignation of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the wake of tehelka.com's expose, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh said on Thursday that the only immediate beneficiary would be Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani.
The chief minister told reporters in Bhopal that following the expose, Bangaru Laxman, who was perceived as Vajpayee's choice to head the Bharatiya Janata Party, had had to resign and his place was taken by Jana Krishnamurthy, whom Advani had wanted in the first place.
"Similarly, if Vajpayee goes, then only Advani can become the prime minister in the present circumstances," Singh remarked.
The Congress, he noted, lacks the numbers to provide an alternative government and there was no possibility of the third front coming to power.
Singh remarked that whenever any crime was committed, the motive and intention behind it needed to be looked into. "In this context, it is quite certain that the only person who can benefit from the tehelka.com expose is Advani."
He denied a suggestion that senior Congress politician Arjun Singh was behind the expose, saying that any benefit the Congress was deriving from the scandal was "purely incidental".
