Krishnamurthy blasts Congress

Tarashankar Sahay in New Delhi

Newly-elected Bharatiya Janata Party President J Krishnamurthy Saturday launched a frontal attack on the Congress, at the party's national executive, stating that the main Opposition party had not learnt a lesson which the electorate taught it in the last mid-term poll in 1999.

Soon after he officially took over as party president, he told media persons, "The Congress, which should function with a sense of responsibility as an Opposition party in a democracy, has chosen to play a negative role inside and outside Parliament."

"Blind opposition, intense hatred for the BJP, unbridled ambition for power and irresponsible leadership, which flouts with impunity democratic norms and tradition, have become hallmarks of the Congress," Krishnamurthy asserted.

Krishnamurthy congratulated Prime Minister A B Vajpayee and the National Democratic Alliance Government for having decided to go in for a thorough probe of tehelka.com's allegations, by a retired Supreme Court Judge.

"The tehelka allegations should be thoroughly investigated, the truth should emerge and the guilty should be punished," added Krishnamurthy.

Former party president Bangaru Laxman was a notable absentee. He had conveyed a message on Friday that he would not attend the BJP National Executive, to facilitate a free and fair discussion on the tehelka issue.

The meet was attended by 65 national executive members and 35 special invitees. Prominent among them were Vajpayee, Union Home Minister L K Advani and Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha.
