Hegde asks Fernandes to step down as NDA convenor

Janata Dal (United) leader Ramakrishna Hegde Sunday demanded that George Fernandes step down as convenor of the National Democratic Alliance till he was cleared of all charges made in the tehelka.com expose.

"I don't want Fernandes to continue as the convenor of the alliance till he comes out clean," Hegde said.

Asked what would be his reaction if Fernandes continued as NDA convenor, the former Karanatka chief minister said: "I will raise the matter at the JD-U parliamentary party meeting on Monday."

He, however, said "as of now I have not dissociated myself from NDA."

Earlier, he was quoted by a private television network as saying that he would not like to be associated with a body which has a tainted leader at its helm.
