We are ready for inquiry: PM

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Wednesday said the government was ready for an inquiry into the expose of corruption charges in fictitious defence deals by tehelka.com.

"Let there be a discussion (in Parliament). We are ready for a discussion and we are ready for an inquiry," Vajpayee told reporters after holding informal consultations with senior Cabinet colleagues, including Home Minister L K Advani, Defence Minister George Fernandes and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan.

Asked to comment on Opposition's demand for the resignation of his government, Vajpayee, in his first reaction since the expose on Tuesday, said, "Let them make a case for the resignation of the government. This is a political demand."

"Let the matter be discussed in the House," he said.

Asked if there was a conspiracy behind the expose, the Prime Minister said, "Daal mein kuch kaala hai (There is something fishy)."

Asked whether the government was ready for an inquiry, Advani said, "We have no objection."

"We are ready for a discussion and we will accept whatever emerges from them. We have nothing to hide," he said.

Replying to questions, Rural Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said, "There seems to be some big conspiracy behind this and the government has nothing to hide and is willing to debate the issue in Parliament if it is allowed to function."

"The government is united on the issue and we are ready for any discussion on the matter," he said.
