The George W Bush administration on Friday named Bobby P Jindal of Louisiana as the federal assistant secretary for health and human services.
Jindal is the first Indian American to occupy a sub-Cabinet post in the Bush government.
Announcing President Bush's decision to appoint him to the post, a White House release said Jindal would be in charge of planning and evaluation.
Jindal, who was born in the United States, had been secretary of the Louisiana department of health and hospitals.
Joy Cherian was the first Indian American to be appointed to a sub-Cabinet position by President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s.
