Sonia Plans US Tour To Woo Diaspora

Suman Guha Mozumder
India Abroad Correspondent in New York

Congress party president Sonia Gandhi will visit the United States this month, to seek support of non-resident Indians, to revitalize the party.

The Overseas Friends of Congress said she was scheduled to arrive on June 24, as a guest of OFC, for a two-day visit to the city, before she moves to other cities.

"Sonia Gandhi wants the Congress to reach out to people (of Indian origin) in different countries, and as part of this effort, she has deputed delegations to various countries," said George Abraham, OFC general secretary. "This is part of that effort."

Abraham said that her itinerary and programs were being given final touches. "As of now, what is certain is that she will address a public meeting at Sheraton Hotel on June 25," Abraham said.

He said that from New York, she will go to Washington DC on June 27, for a few days. On whether she would meet President George W Bush or any administration officials, Abraham said her engagements were not known as yet. "We will give details in a few days," he said.

Sources said her visit was to reach out to the Indian Diaspora. "Obviously, Indians here are playing an important role (in India) and many of them want democracy to continue and flourish in the country," the sources said.

Abraham said that OFC supporters were very happy. "The last time she came here was in 1993, in connection with the meeting of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation," he said.

The scheduled visit by Sonia Gandhi comes less than a month after former finance minister Manmohan Singh was hosted by the OFC during a visit here.
