President Chandrika Kumaratunga has invited leaders of major opposition parties in Sri Lanka for urgent discussions on the current political situation and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam's audacious attack on the main military air base and international airport on Tuesday.
The letters sent out by her office to the United National Party, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and Tamil parties came a day after she had called for political unity in the country in combating terrorism and ushering in peace.
She had sought separate meetings with them.
In her televised address to the nation on Wednesday night Kumaratunga had asked all parties to put aside political and other differences, as well as petty personal desire for power and privilege in order to rebuild the nation.
