Kumaratunga orders inquiry into airport attack

K Venkataramanan in Colombo

Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga on Tuesday night said that she has ordered a full-scale inquiry into the security lapses that led to the attack on the airbase and nearby international airport.

She added assured stringent action would be taken 'wherever warranted'.

She made the announcement at a late night meeting of her cabinet, official sources said.

The cabinet discussed the damage that was likely to be caused to the economy and tourist industry because of the attack.

Describing the offensive as yet another instance of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam plotting to disrupt Sri Lanka's economy and subvert its constitutional process, the cabinet appealed for calm among the people.
