4.5 million take holy dip in Sangam

An estimated 4.5 million pilgrims took the ritual dip at the Sangam till noon on Thursday on the occasion of Magh Poornima even as devotees continued to arrive in Kumbh Nagar in Uttar Pradesh in large numbers.

Mela district magistrate Jhivesh Nandan said the bathing went on peacefully and there was no report of any untoward incident from anywhere.

About seven million pilgrims were expected take a holy bath in the Sangam till late in the evening, he said.

Devotes in large numbers had started gathering at the Sangam ghats since Wednesday, he said, adding the ritual bathing began shortly after midnight.

The mela administration has made elaborate arrangements to ensure safety of the pilgrims, coming from all parts of the country.

Movement of heavy traffic has been restricted on roads leading to the Sangam and all entry points to the mela area have been sealed and security personnel deployed in strength, he said.

Through members of the various akharas had left the mela area after the completion of the shahi snan, the ghats near the Sangam wore a festive look with pilgrims and Kalpapasis gathering for the holy dip.
