Fate of trapped miners remains unknown

No communication has yet been established with the 38 miners trapped since Friday noon in the Bagdigi colliery of the Bharat Coking Coal Limited in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, even as the authorities maintained that the chances of their survival were high.

BCCL sources said on Saturday morning that said several underground boring machines were still pumping out water from the mine in an attempt to establish contact with the trapped men.

"We are trying our best to rescue the miners and officers... It will take time to flush out water as 56 million gallons of water gushed into the mine," the sources said.

The number of men trapped inside is still not clear. The authorities again said they had found the names of 38 miners trapped. But other reports put their number at 45 at least.

Among those trapped are a manager and an assistant manager. Several other miners managed to escape.

The site of the accident is swarming with worried relatives and workers from other collieries anxious to know the fate of their trapped colleagues.
