Tenancy order applies to new tenants only: Delhi Lt Governor

The drive was launched by the Delhi police with a view to keeping a check on terrorists and anti-social elements.

"The requirement is only of giving an intimation to the police station and the tenancy need not await any approval and permission from the police," said a Raj Niwas statement issued after a meeting the Lt Governor had with the principal secretary (home) and senior police officers.

At the meeting it was emphasised that the order should be so operated that it does not expose bona fide citizens to undue harassment, it said.

Instructions are being issued to the police that though the offence under Section 188 of IPC, which is made out by non-compliance of the aforesaid order, is non-bailable in Delhi, no arrests shall be undertaken, it said.

"Any cases arising from non-compliance of the order will be investigated and followed up according to the law," the statement said.

The Delhi police have launched a crackdown on house owners and tenants in the capital following the December 13 terrorist strike and arrested over 100 people who had not intimated about tenancy to police.
