Delhi Police commissioner might be replaced

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

While there is widespread appreciation for the security personnel, six of whom were killed, in all quarters for foiling the suicide attack on Parliament House, speculation is rife that Delhi Police Commissioner Ajay Raj Sharma's head would be the first one to roll for the 'security lapse'.

Home ministry sources said officials have already launched a hunt for a successor to Sharma, who has completed three years as the police chief.

Names of Ajay Aggarwal, senior most police official in Delhi and now posted as director general of Tihar Jail, R S Gupta special commissioner in-charge of VIP security, and also holding temporary charge of intelligence wing of the Delhi police are being mentioned as likely successors of Sharma.

Sources added that R K Sharma, special commissioner in Delhi police, S Ramakrishna director general of home guards might also be in contention.

The name of M N Singh, commissioner of Mumbai Police, is also being mentioned in the top circles, the sources said.

"Whatever may be the case, it would not be proper to transfer Ajay Raj Sharma at this juncture, as it would send wrong signals. In fact all the Parliamentarians have commended the prompt action taken by the Delhi Police," Vijay Kumar Malhotra, BJP's spokesperson in the Parliament told rediff.com.

Another senior police official of Delhi police agreed with his assessment.

"If the terrorists had managed to escape, then the head of the Delhi Police commissioner would have rolled. But since the Delhi Police managed to kill all the five terrorists in the encounter, it may not be easy to change Sharma right now. The people would not like it. But it might hasten his departure," he said.
