Assam minister serves notice to Tehelka.com

Assam PWD Minister Sarat Barkotoky on Friday said he had served a notice to news portal Tehelka.com asking it to apologise to him publicly within 10 days for carrying a news report claiming he had paid Rs 1.5 million to Sanghamitra Bharali to make public her marriage to former chief minister and Asom Gana Parishad president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta.

Barkotoky said if Tehelka failed to apologise within the stipulated period, he would file a civil and criminal suit claiming damages of Rs 50 million for publishing a false and fabricated report.

He claimed that Priya Singh, who authored the report, was 'actually a senior correspondent of a national daily based in Guwahati'.

The report, which appeared on the web site on Monday, had claimed that Bharali 'went across to the Congress and was paid Rs 1.5 million, handed over by Sarat Barkotoky, a minister in the Congress government in Assam, to spill the beans on her roaring affair with Mahanta'.
