Samata demands security for sex workers

Samata Party on Thursday expressed apprehension about the security of the sex workers involved in the 'so-called sting operations' of Tehelka.com and demanded adequate security for them.

It also virtually demanded withdrawal of security cover to the portal's CEO Tarun Tejpal.

"We are worried that these people (Tehelka) may now try to cause physical harm to the prostitutes they involved in the so-called sting operations," Samata general secretary and spokesman Shambhu Shrivastava said.

"We do not see any reason why those hapless women should not be provided with security," he said.

"The basic fact is that after what has appeared in the press on Wednesday and Thursday, their (Tehelka's) credibility is not only nil but is minus. They have shown themselves to be a bunch of criminals and pimps. Their place is in jail. It is a pity that such people are enjoying 'Z' plus security," the Samata leader said.

Only a week back, Delhi police chargesheeted Rashtriya Janata Dal MP from Bihar Mohammad Shahabuddin, his alleged associate Bhupinder Tyagi alias Avdesh and nine others for allegedly conspiring to eliminate Tehlka CEO Tarun Tejpal and one of its journalists.

Tehelka has defended using prostitutes in its investigations saying 'extraordinary circumstances demand extraordinary methods'.
