Jammu killings aimed at 'disturbing communal harmony': Hurriyat

The Hurriyat Conference on Wednesday condemned the killing of 'innocent people' at the Jammu railway station terming it as an act aimed at 'disturbing communal harmony' in Jammu and Kashmir.

"We condemn the act in the strongest terms. The perpetrators of this crime are enemies of humanity," former Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said.

He said the killing was aimed at disturbing communal harmony in the state.

He demanded a high level 'fair' inquiry by a 'neutral body' to identify the culprits.

Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Forum president Bhushan Bazaz also condemned the killings saying 'it is a dastardly act by those who do not want peace to return in the state'.

"These elements should be identified and punished severely," Bazaz said.

But the Hurriyat Conference, however, put the responsibility on the 'rigid stand' of the Centre on the Kashmir issue and said it will launch a mass awareness programme to highlight it.

"People of the country should understand that the continued rigid stand of New Delhi in not acknowledging Kashmir issue was leading to such ghastly acts," Farooq said.

Farooq said the recent visit of the Hurriyat Conference leaders to Calcutta and Madras was a success.

Umer Farooq and senior leader Abdul Gani Lone had recently visited Calcutta and Madras to participate in seminars organised by various Non-Governmental Organisations.
