Chaka Khan to perform at Zgold Awards

A P Kamath

Chaka Khan, the seven-time Grammy Award winner, will join Steven Segal, the star of the current hit, Exit Wounds, on April 28 at the Zgold Bollywood awards at the Nassau Coliseum, New York.

With her singing career nearly three decades old, Chaka is one of America's most celebrated artists.

"The south Asian community will get an opportunity to witness the dazzling performance of Chaka Khan on April 28th which promises to be a spectacular and a memorable night," said Kamal Dandona, chairman of the Bollywood awards.

The awards have drawn such music world celebrities as Michael Jackson. But Chaka Khan is not just attending the event, Dandona says, adding he expects her performance to be one of the highlights of the evening.

Dandona has been her fan for many years. Whether she's bending a note, effortlessly soaring above or below a melody, or reaching out to listeners with aching, haunting melody, he notes, she does so with faithful perfection.

"If Aretha's voice has been labeled a 'national treasure', Chaka Khan's influence on female vocalists should require a 'national holiday'!! " said her spokesperson.

Dandona said while several Hollywood actors such Steven Seagal, Jean Claude Van Damme, Jose Feliciano have confirmed their participation, he expects many more.

Previous participants include star Richard Gere and film-makers Ismail Merchant and Shekhar Kapoor.
