BJP having second thoughts
on post-Tehelka rallies

With some National Democratic Alliance allies giving a cold response to the combine's counter-offensive on the Tehelka expose, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday indicated it was having second thoughts whether to push ahead with the rallies planned across the country.

Though it went ahead with Thursday's rally in Bangalore addressed by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, BJP spokesman V K Malhotra told reporters in New Delhi, "The NDA Co-ordination Committee is likely to meet in a day or two to rethink its strategy as there has been no challenge from the Congress," he said.

Malhotra's remarks came in the backdrop of the Telugu Desam Party, a key ally of the Vajpayee government, staying away from the NDA rally in Hyderabad on Wednesday addressed by Home Minister L K Advani and NDA convenor George Fernandes.

JD (U) leader Ramakrishna Hegde had said his party would not attend the Bangalore rally.

A similar rally in Bombay on April 8, which was to be addressed by Vajpayee, has been cancelled, BJP city president Vinod Tawade said.

Sources said the rally did not evoke much response from its ally Shiv Sena.

For the record, however, Malhotra said, "The NDA launched the campaign as Congress president Sonia Gandhi has declared a war at its plenary session in Bangalore but after we accepted the challenge, there seems to be no challenge and Congressmen are not sighted anywhere. She then went to Hong Kong for what no one knows."
