Doctors check Vajpayee's knees

Amberish K Diwanji in New York

The prime minister will not visit a New York hospital on Tuesday.

As it now transpires, Dr Chittranjan S Ranawat of the Lennox Hill Hospital (www.lennoxhillhospital.org), New York, examined Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee late on Monday night.

The prime minister is suffering from osteoarthritis, an extremely painful condition in the knee caused by the wearing out of the cartilage between the two bones that meet at the knee. This makes standing rather painful. The condition of the left knee is rather grave.

Dr Ranawat is considered one of the world's foremost experts in the area of knee replacement, while the Lennox Hill Hospital is also among the best in the world for joint replacement surgeries.

On Tuesday morning, another panel of three doctors will examine the prime minister at his suite at the Waldorf Astoria hotel, New York.

Any laser or knee-replacement surgery will only be done in India. Right now the doctors are only examining his knees and conduct some minor tests.
