Pak information minister quits

Pakistan's Information Minister Javed Jabbar, who has been attacked for his alleged mishandling of the publicity campaign during military ruler Gen Pervez Musharraf's recent visit to the United States of America, resigned on Friday citing 'personal reasons'.

"I have tendered the resignation and will not accept any other ministry," said Jabbar, who was also advisor to Gen Musharraf on national affairs.

Reports suggest that the military ruler himself had asked the minister to resign.

Pakistani media had said that the wrong policies of Gen Musharraf regime virtually gave a walkover to Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee during the visit to New York last month.

It has been alleged that Jabbar had failed to establish good relations between the press and the military government. Religious parties were also critical of Jabbar's role and described him as the 'representative' of non-governmental organisations.

In another development, Director General of Pakistan Radio Anwar Mehmood has been appointed as Information Secretary.

Meanwhile, the Frontier Post on Saturday reported that Finance Minister Shaukat Aziz and Commerce Minister Razzaq Daud are also likely to resign within a couple of days. There was no government reaction to the report.
