Security tightened around J&K assembly

Senior police officials, including Deputy Inspector General of Police were present outside the assembly complex keeping a close watch.

Patrolling in Hari Singh High Street, Exhibition Crossing, Goni Khan Budshah flats, Budshah Chowk, Maisuma, Koker Bazaar and Red Cross Road was increased and security forces extensively searched these areas on Saturday morning to make sure that no militant was hiding there.

The Border Security Force and police were searching all vehicles and pedestrians were also frisked at more than three places on the routes leading to the assembly complex.

Police personnel deployed near the Jehangir Chowk also directed journalists, having valid passes from the assembly secretary, to take a longer route to enter the complex. However, it was only after the intervention by a superintendent of police they were allowed to go into the hall.

No vehicle, except that of ministers, members of the legislative assembly and security forces, was being allowed to move through Budshah Chowk which remained closed during assembly hours, leading to traffic jams in Civil Lines.

Shopkeepers in the localities adjacent to the assembly alleged that restrictions during assembly hours had badly affected their business.
