Saifuddin Choudhury off CPI-M rolls

Former member of the Lok Sabha Saifuddin Choudhury, who came into the limelight by demanding greater democratic functioning and transparency in party affairs, has been 'dropped' from the Communist Party of India-Marxist rolls, party sources said on Tuesday.

The central committee of the CPI-M, which is meeting in New Delhi to finalise the proposals for reviewing the party programme, unanimously approved the decision of the party's West Bengal state committee not to renew Choudhury's membership, they said.

The sources said Chaudhury had wanted 'honourable dissociation' from the party. So he was not expelled and his name was dropped from the membership list, they added.

The state secretariat's decision was placed before the central committee, which approved the decision unanimously, they said.

Choudhury could not immediately be contacted as he is in Calcutta.
